Negative carryover: why the higher rate can pay less

See how carrying a negative revenue balance into the next period changes affiliate commission, with a complete three-period example.

THE DEFINITION

Negative carryover means an agreement carries a negative revenue balance into a later calculation period. Future positive results may have to offset it before commission is earned. The contract also determines brand pooling, resets and exceptions. A no-carryover headline must be read together with those details.

This illustration assumes the same revenue results, a 30% share, no other deductions and a negative opening balance of zero. It compares two simplified fictional contracts. It is not a representation of a named programme's full agreement.

Read the exceptions

LeoVegas's cited version separates ordinary negative-period treatment from fraud, written carryover arrangements and its Big Winner policy. It also has brand calculation and set-off provisions. That is a reason to read the complete agreement rather than interpreting a label as an unconditional promise.

Ask these questions before comparing percentages

Establish the calculation period and whether brands or markets are pooled. Ask when a negative balance resets, whether a large customer result has separate treatment and what happens after inactivity or termination. Keep any individual changes in writing.

Use a period ledger

Record opening balance, current eligible revenue, adjustments, closing balance and earned commission. Reconcile those lines to the source statement. If a programme says there is no negative carryover, ask which exceptions and recovery rights still apply. A higher headline share cannot answer those questions.
